Wow, this isn’t graffiti! Some of these are very creative–some rather strange and cartoonish–but it is art. I especially like the little guy peaking out under the table (or is it a bench?). The Shmit one had a lot of planning. Have you ever seen anyone working on one of these things? I’m sure a lot of them are statements of some kind, though I don’t know what. And these are all on your way to work? Not a boring city scape.
That’s right–this stuff isn’t your run-of-the-mill graffiti, that’s why I referred to it as Urban Art. It’s on a higher level. I have not seen anyone working on these things before which is surprising considering the sheer amount of it in the area.
It would appear that many of these things are done with permission. They’re so complex and detailed, I don’t see how an artist could make them using a “tag-and-run” sort of tactic. Some of these designs appear to have been commissioned by store owners–there are some that are specifically crafted for the storefront they cover. I will have to get some examples of these in a future update so you can see what I mean.
These are awesome. I love urban art. We were lucky enough to see some in Trier when we were in Germany last year. There is some seriously amazing stuff. That Che Guevara piece is done by a British artist named Banksy. He does predominantly stencils, and has some pretty epic pieces. There is a ton of his stuff online if you google him. Looking forward to more pics!
Ah…Banksy. Yes, I just found out about him recently when my friend Scott gave me a copy of “Exit Through The Gift Shop” to watch. I assume you’ve already seen it? If not, you’ll definitely dig it!
